In The Groove
Ken Griffey, Jr.

In June of 1987, during his pro debut in Bellingham, Washington, Kenneth (Ken) Griffey, Jr. did something few baseball professionals have ever done before -- he belted a homerun in his first trip to the plate. Nobody sitting in that stadium had any inkling that what they had witnessed was to become a routine spectacle for the man now considered by many as the best all-around player in baseball.

In 1997, the baseball world held its collective breath as the Seattle Mariners centerfielder made a run at the coveted homerun record set by the Yankees’ #9 Roger Maris. Though his 56 homeruns fell shy of Maris’ 61, his prodigious swing earned him the 1997 Major League MVP, as well as establishing him as one of the most revered figures in contemporary sports.

Inspired by Griffey’s remarkable but young career, America’s Sports Artist, Rick Rush, has captured this magnificent effort by bringing to the canvas all the emotion, unadulterated power and excitement of “Junior’s” picturesque swing. “In the Groove” is vintage Rush, a rendering that will be treasured by sports enthusiasts for years to come as they -- like the fans who shared Griffey’s first homerun -- enjoy the career of this certain pick for baseball’s Hall of Fame.
