Royal Finish
Kansas City Royals' 1985 World Series Comeback

This serigraph depicts the Kansas City Royals' brilliant victory against the Cardinals in the 1985 World Series. Kansas City lost the first two games of the Series at home, and having to play two games away, their chances of being swept away were good. Of course, being “away” was not 2,000 miles, but simply 250 miles across Missouri on Route I-70. The Series even became known as the I-70 Series.

Kansas City won the third game and although they lost game four and were down 3-1, they came back to win the next three games and The World Series, with Bret Saberhagen being voted Most Valuable Player.

In the celebration at the mound, you can see the face of former coach, Dick Howser (in the top right corner), who died of cancer several years after the series.

Also in the scene are Hal McRae (#11), who went on to coach for the Royals ‘91-‘94, Saberhagen (#31), George Brett (#5) who is hugging Saberhagen, Sunberg (catcher), Wilson (#6), Smith (#21). Pryor (#4), Biancalana (#1) and Balboni (#45).
