The 1988 National Champions, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish

This serigraph depicts the 1988 National Championship game between Notre Dame and the University of West Virginia. The location was the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Ariz., on January 1, 1989. The image shows Notre Dame quarterback and MVP of the game, Tony Rice, #9 with the football, who had a game-high 75 yards rushing and a career-high 213 yards passing. He completed seven of 11 throws and had two touchdowns. The Notre Dame offense rolled up 455 net yards while their defense held West Virginia to a mere 282, their lowest in 19 games. The Irish of Notre Dame won the game 34-21 and their eighth national championship, the most for any school on history.
